English singer Waters talks situation in Palestine

RAMALLAH, February 11, 2018 (WAFA) – English singer Roger Walters spoke on Friday about the situation between Palestine and Israel during an event for the Australia Palestine Advocacy Network (APAN).

Waters, member of the rock band Pink Floyd, has been working to bridge peace between Palestinians and Israelis especially after Israeli fans confronted him at one of his concerts in Tel Aviv.

He recalled asking his audience to try to make peace with the Palestinians 12 years ago, which stirred up a debate.

Waters told APAN about an incident with Little Steven, Steven Van Zandt from the E Street Band who produced Sun City, “I wrote to him and said ‘hey Steve, don’t you think it’s time we did one of these about Palestine because the situation is appalling. It is exactly the same situation it was in South Africa, its worse,” Waters said.

He wrote waters back saying, “I think the situation in Palestine is much more complicated and that turned into a threat.

Van Zandt said, “I think you should be very careful about what you do and what you say because your career could be over in a heartbeat.”

Waters explained, “He did say however he admired my courage and would love to have lunch so I wrote back and said “What about next Friday?” That was four years ago.”

Waters has organized a lot of campaigns in order to convince musicians to cancel and boycott performances in Israel.

He recently praised New Zealand’s singer Lorde for cancelling a show that was scheduled for June in Tel Aviv heeding calls by activists in the boycott, divestment and sanction (BDS) movement.
