Former Palestinian prisoner Riyad Al-Amour dies in Egypt after long illness

CAIRO, April 3, 2026 (WAFA) – Former Palestinian prisoner Riyad Al-Amour, 56, from Bethlehem, who had been exiled to Egypt, passed away today after a prolonged struggle with illness.

Al-Amour, a prominent former prisoner who endured systematic medical neglect during his 23 years in Israeli detention, had been released last October under the Gaza ceasefire agreement. He suffered from severe heart problems and had waited more than a decade for a pacemaker replacement while in prison.

Following years of mistreatment, torture, and harsh conditions, Al-Amour’s health remained fragile. He recently underwent surgery, which led to serious complications and a drop in oxygen levels, requiring intensive care.

Before his detention in 2002, Al-Amour had faced persistent harassment, and during his imprisonment he endured severe interrogation and torture, which resulted in the loss of hearing in one ear.

Many former prisoners who were exiled face critical health challenges due to medical crimes committed during their detention, particularly after prolonged periods of systemic abuse.
