RAMALLAH, December 14, 2017 (WAFA) – European Union (EU) member states are leaning toward recognizing the state of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital, Abdel Rahim Farra, Palestine’s ambassador to the EU, said on Thursday.
Farra told Voice of Palestine radio that some EU members are expected to present a resolution at an EU meeting on Tuesday, which would oblige all member states to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of two states, Palestine and Israel.
He explained that a change has happened in EU countries after the American recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, pointing out that the European Union cannot play a key role in the peace process without recognizing the State of Palestine.
The main EU member states have strongly criticized the US move on Jerusalem, which they fear could derail efforts to bring a peaceful solution to the decades-long Palestinian-Israeli conflict based on the two-state solution. The EU position on Jerusalem is that it is the capital of the two states.
