PM Hamdallah arrives in Gaza boosting hope of reconciliation

RAMALLAH, October 2 (WAFA) – Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah and his government arrived in the Gaza Strip on Monday boosting hope of national reconciliation after 10 years of division between the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Arriving into the Palestinian-controlled part of Gaza at Beit Hanoun (Erez) crossing arriving from Ramallah, Hamdallah received an official and popular reception.

Addressing the crowds, he urged people to support the reconciliation efforts.

The delegation is scheduled to also visit a house in Shajaiyeh neighborhood of Gaza City destroyed during Israel’s 2014 war on the Gaza Strip before holding meetings with the various political factions in Gaza.

The cabinet is scheduled to hold its first meeting in Gaza on Tuesday morning after which it will assume its official duty as the government in charge of the  Gaza Strip.

The reconciliation was facilitated three weeks ago when Hamas, the de facto power in Gaza since 2007, has dissolved the administrative committee it had established in March to run Gaza affairs and agreed to turn over power to the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority.
