Newspapers Review: King of Jordan’s visit to Ramallah focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, August 8, 2017 (WAFA) – King Abdullah II of Jordan’s visit to Ramallah and his meeting with President Mahmoud Abbas dominated the front page headlines in Palestinian Arabic dailies on Tuesday.

The dailies said Abbas and Abdullah agreed to set up a joint crisis team.

Al-Quds said both leaders discussed the challenges to Jerusalem and the peace process and agreed to continue coordination on all issues including Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and East Jerusalem.

Abdullah was reported in al-Quds stressing his support for the creation of the independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital and in al-Hayat al-Jadida reiterating his full support of the Palestinian people and Abbas-led Palestinian leadership.

Al-Quds said the Palestinian journalists syndicate called upon those who allowed Israeli reporters access to the presidential headquarters to cover Abdullah’s visit to Ramallah to be held accountable by Abbas himself.

The dailies highlighted a Human Rights Watch-published report titled Israel: Jerusalem Palestinians stripped of status.

They quoted the report: “Between the start of Israel’s occupation of East Jerusalem in 1967 and the end of 2016, Israel revoked the status of at least 14,595 Palestinians from East Jerusalem.”

Al-Quds added the report reveals racial discrimination against and forced transfers of Palestinians in East Jerusalem.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted the report: “Deportation or forced transfers of ]Palestinians in Jerusalem[ could amount to war crimes ]under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court[.”

Al-Quds said Palestinians in Jerusalem were urged to express their solidarity with the Shamasneh family, who were handed a final Israeli court order asking them to leave their home, which they have rented since 1964, in East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah to the benefit of Jewish settlers.

This call was made by Fatah official in charge of Jerusalem affairs Hatem Abdul-Qader.

It added groups of Israeli Jewish settlers continued to force their way in flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

The dailies reported two Palestinians were injured by rubber-coated metal bullets and others suffocated during clashes that erupted after hundreds of Israeli Jewish settlers flocked to Joseph’s Tomb on the outskirts of Nablus.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said Israeli Jewish settlers from Beitar Illit settlement, south of Bethlehem, set up mobile caravans on Palestinian land belonging to the Bethlehem-district village of Nahalin.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Israeli forces detained 15 Palestinians, including a girl, as they conducted multiple raids across the West Bank.

It added Israeli Prison Service (IPS) special forces raided section 1 of the Ramon prison, brutally attacking Palestinian prisoners.

It added Israeli forces handed demolition notices for 4 Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan.

Al-Quds reported President of the Gaza-based Civil Servants Union Arref Abu-Jarad announcing that over 6,000 civil servants were sent into early retirement.

It published an article titled Amidst Palestinians’ mistrust in ]US President Donald[ Trump’s team, the peace process portfolio is now kept in the US freezer.

It also reported Secretary-General of Fatah’s Revolutionary Council Majed al-Fityani announcing Fatah Central Committee would convene within few days to propose a date for the Palestinian National Council’s meeting.

Al-Ayyam reported Hamas-affiliated First Deputy of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) Ahmad Bahr reiterating Hamas’ refusal to dissolve the administrative committee it had established to run the affairs of the besieged Gaza Strip.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida added an anti-Arab Israeli soccer team  has won the “anti-racism” prize.

Spotlighting a new research published by the International Journal of Public Health, they said violence is creating a “lost generation” of Middle East men.

Finally, al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Palestinian Foreign and Expatriates Ministry denying media reports that the Palestinian Authority was pushing Jordan to reopen the Israeli embassy in Amman out of concern about the fate of hundreds of Palestinians with Jordanian citizenship who have applied for Israeli visas to visit their families in the occupied Palestinian territories.
