Newspapers focus on Israeli bill to “annex” illegal Maale Adumim settlement

RAMALLAH, March 3, 2017 (WAFA) – The imminent introduction of a formerly postponed bill to Israel’s Parliament, the Knesset, in order to “annex” the Israeli settlement of Maale Adumim, built illegally on occupied West Bank land to the east of Jerusalem, hit the front page headlines in local Palestinian dailies.

Al-Quds said a bill which aims to “annex” the Israeli settlement of Maale Adumim and impose Israeli law on the E1 corridor surrounding it is set to be introduced to the Knesset.

It reported on the Palestinian foreign Ministry as stating, the bill would constitute a “real test to the international community and US President Donald Trump’s administration.”

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Quds said the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was urged to add the Israeli military to a blacklist of countries and armed groups that commit grave violations against children.

On the other hand, al-Ayyam said scores of Palestinians suffocated and others were shot and injured during violent clashes with Israeli forces in the East Jerusalem town of Abu Dis, the Bethlehem’s refugee camp of Duheisha and the Jenin’s village of Zububa.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida added undercover Israeli forces raided Duheisha refugee camp, sparking violent clashes that lasted for over four hours.

The dailies also reported on Secretary-General of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Executive Committee Saed Erekat as stating the PLO rejects introducing any changes to the Arab Peace Initiative.

Al-Quds reported on Knesset member Ahmad Tibi as saying Palestinian homes in Jerusalem are demolished following the direct orders of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The dailies said Israeli military targeted two alleged observation sites in north and east of Beit Lahiya in the northern besieged Gaza Strip.

Al-Quds explained Israeli military pounded the sites shortly after shots were fired at soldiers deployed near the border.  

Al-Quds reported on member of PLO’s Executive Committee Zakaria al-Agha as calling on the UK government to recognize the Palestinian state.

It added in this regard that Palestinian Ambassador to the UK Manuel Hassassian discussed ]with Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee Crispin Blunt[ preparations to hold the parliament accountable for London’s role in the Middle East peace process.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on Minister of Education Sabri Saydam as announcing the Ministry is scheduled soon to commence procedures to dispatch 180 Palestinian teachers to Kuwait.

Al-Ayyam added security services recovered a government employee’s vehicle after it was briefly seized in the Ramallah’s refugee camp of al-Jalazoun.

It also highlighted Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah’s visit to Khan al-Ahmar, one of 46 Palestinian Bedouin communities, east of Jerusalem, whom Israel seeks to forcibly displace.

It reported on Hamdallah as expressing his commitment to continue to support “our citizens” in the community.

It reported on Jordan’s King Abduallah II as affirming that any proposals to solve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict that are not based on the two-state solution would have serious repercussions ]on the security and stability of the region[.
