RAMALLAH, December 26, 2016 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted in their Monday issue repercussion of the anti-settlements vote at the United Nations Security Council where 14 members voted in favor of the resolution with the United States abstaining.
The headline in al-Hayat al-Jadida that went across the top of the front page in big bold letters said: “Where is Israel going after the Security Council decision?”
It said in another headline lower on the same page: “Political madness in the Netanyahu government after the Security Council decision.”
Al-Ayyam’s main front page story headline said: “The after effects of Resolution 2334: Israel reprimanding world countries and gestures more settlements in Jerusalem.”
It included several reaction stories on its front page related to developments as a result of the Security Council vote.
The paper quoted Foreign Minister Riyad Malki saying the Palestinian Authority will consider evoking Article 7 at the Security Council if Israel continues with settlement construction.
Al-Quds also tackled this subject in its main front page stories and said in one headline quoting sources as saying that Europe and the US may reach an agreement to submit a new resolution at the Security Council that talks about a final solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
It said that Israel plans to build 5600 new housing units in the settlements in reaction to the Security Council vote.
In other headlines in al-Quds, the paper quoted member of Fatah Central Committee Jibril Rjoub calling on Hamas to speed up reconciliation steps in light of the Security Council vote.
The paper said an Israeli court sentenced Shouroq Dwayyat, 19, from Jerusalem to 16 years in prison plus $20,000 fine after convicting her of stabbing an Israeli in the Old City of Jerusalem more than a year ago.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the Israeli military closed with cement cubes the road between Jalazoun refugee camp and Ramallah, as well as an overpass between Ras Karkar and Deir Ibzi, to the west of Ramallah. It printed a picture of the gate closing that road.
The papers said President Mahmoud Abbas called the family of Ahmad Kharoubi to extend his condolences. Kharoubi, 19, was shot dead by Israeli forces last week when youths confronted an Israeli army force that raided Kufr Aqab, south of Jerusalem, to demolish a Palestinian home.
