Newspaper Review: Demolition Raids into Nablus, Hebron Districts Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, August 10, 2016 (WAFA) – The demolition of Palestinian structures in the Nablus area of Sabastiya and the Hebron locality of Umm al-Kheir hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

Al-Ayyam said Israeli bulldozers demolished five Palestinian houses and two businesses near the Hebron town of Yatta and the Nablus town of Sabastiya.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli forces demolished five Palestinian houses in the Hebron locality of Khirbet Umm al-Kheir, displacing 27 Palestinians.

Highlighting Israeli police’s plans to boost their presence across Jerusalem, the three dailies reported police decided to install hundreds of cameras across the city.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam added police also decided to open five new police stations in the Jerusalem neighborhoods of al-Issawiya, Silwan, Jabal al-Mukabbir, Sur Baher and Ras al-Amud.

Highlighting other Israeli assaults across the West Bank, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said Israeli forces raided the Bethlehem refugee camp of al-Duheisha, injuring seven Palestinians with live bullets and ]re-detaining a Palestinian[.

They also said Israeli forces handcuffed and detained a Palestinian girl near the Ibrahimi Mosque in the southern West Bank city of Hebron for an alleged stabbing attempt.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said scores of Palestinian students suffocated as Israeli forces attacked Al-Quds University campus in the Jerusalem town of Abu Dis with tear gas canisters.

They also reported Israeli bulldozers uprooted scores of olive trees in the Bethlehem village of Wadi Rahhal.

Highlighting the situation of hunger-striking Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons, the three dailies reported Chairman of the Detainees and Ex-Detainees Committee Issa Qaraqe‘ warning that hunger strikers are likely to die at any moment.

They added clashes erupted as Israeli police and settlers assaulted dozens of Palestinians who protested in solidarity with hunger striker Bilal Kayid in front of Israel’s Barzilai hospital in Ashkelon.

Al-Ayyam also reported in this regard the Israeli Supreme Court turned down an appeal to move hunger-striking prisoners Muhammad and Mahmoud al-Balboul to a hospital outside of prison following their health deterioration.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said President Mahmoud Abbas approved a decision to cover all financial expenses of a second family visitation session for families of Palestinian detainees currently held in Israeli prisons.

Abbas was also reported in the three dailies as announcing that the way has been paved for ensuring successful democratic process.

Finally, al-Ayyam said a Palestinian employee of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Gaza was handcuffed and detained by Israeli purportedly for diverting funds to the Hamas movement.
