RAMALLAH, August 6, 2016 (WAFA) – The shooting and injuring of Palestinians by Israeli forces as the latter forcefully dispersed weekly Friday protests across the West Bank and east of Gaza Strip hit the front page headlines in Palestinian daily newspapers.
Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said six Palestinians were shot and injured with live rounds during clashes with Israeli forces east of Gaza’s al-Bureij refugee camp. Al-Quds reported that one Palestinian sustained a critical injury.
The three dailies said many Palestinians suffocated and others were shot and injured with rubber-coated steel bullets as Israeli forces quelled weekly Friday protests held in solidarity with hungers-striking Palestinian detainees across the West Bank.
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said about 400 Palestinian detainees observed a hunger strike ]in protest of Israeli Prison Service’s harassment or in solidarity with Bilal Kayed, who entered his 52 days of hunger strike.[
Highlighting demolition of Palestinian property, al-Quds reported Israeli forces demolished two structures used for agricultural purposes and a water well in the Yatta locality of Farsh al-Hawa in the southern West Bank district of Hebron.
The three dailies cited a report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) revealing that the demolition of Palestinian structures in Jerusalem in 2016 increased by 40 percent compared to the entire 2015.
Highlighting settlers’ politicization of archeology in the West Bank, al-Hayat al-Jadida said hundreds of settlers stormed the Nablus village of Awarta and performed religious rituals at local archeological sites.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli forces closed several roads leading to the Hebron village of Masafer Yata in the southern West Bank.
Official Israeli and US remarks on the Iran nuclear deal also hit the front page headlines in dailies.
Covering the story in its main front page news item, al-Quds said US President Barak Obama slammed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu along with his supports in US Congress and reported him as affirming that Israel has recognized the positive elements of the deal.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said Israeli ‘Defence’ Ministry rebuked Obama after he defended the deal.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida explained in this regard that Israeli ‘Defence’ Ministry likened the Iran nuclear deal to the 1938 Munich deal with Nazi Germany.
Al-Ayyam said the HAWK University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hildesheim cancelled a course on Palestine following pressures.
It also said Mohammad Halabi, World Vision’s operations manager in the Gaza Strip, denied Israeli accusations of funneling millions of dollars to Hamas.
