Newspaper Review: Paris’ Middle East Peace Conference Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, June 4, 2016 (WAFA) – The international conference convened in Paris to help set the framework for upcoming Palestinian-Israeli talks hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

The three dailies reported that the international conference concluded on Friday with participants reaffirming their commitment to the two-state solution. Al-Ayyam added that participants warned that the status quo in the region is unsustainable.

Highlighting official Palestinian position on the conference, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) official Saeb Erekat as praising the conference as “a very significant step”.

French President Francois Hollande was reported in al-Quds as stating that the French initiative could help provide guarantees for a durable agreement.

European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida as warning that the peace process would fully collapse.

Erekat was also reported in al-Ayyam as stating that the conference is “the flicker of hope Palestinians have been waiting for,” but they still don’t have any illusions about the conference.

Presidential Spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh was reported in al-Quds and al-Ayyam as stating that the Palestinian leadership calls for the Israeli occupation to be fully brought to an end and the Arab Peace Initiative not to be diluted/ amended.

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida as stating that the Arab Peace Initiative is “the best way” to make peace and that it could not be diluted or amended.

Highlighting official Israeli position to the conference, Israel’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Emmanuel Nahson was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida as stating that it had “pushed peace further away”.

Covering weekly Friday protests across the West Bank and Gaza, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that seven Palestinians were shot and injured, including one shot and injured in the head, and dozens others suffocated as Israeli forces quelled the protests.

The three dailies reported Israel released Palestinian lawmaker Khalida Jarrar after being held for 14 months in Israeli detention centers.

Finally, al-Quds said International Criminal Court is consulting with Israel over opening an inquiry into Israeli war crimes in Gaza.
