Newspaper Review: Returning Bodies of Palestinians Killed by Israeli Forces Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, May 28, 2016 (WAFA) – Returning the bodies of two Palestinians, Abdul-Fattah al-Sharif and Sawsan Mansour, by Israel and their funeral processions hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

The three dailies reported that Israeli military (occupation) authorities returned the body of Abdul-Fattah al-Sharif, whose funeral would be held Saturday afternoon.

It is worth noting in this regard that al-Sharif was shot dead by an Israeli soldier following an alleged stabbing attempt in the Hebron neighborhood of Tal Rumeida in March. A volunteer with Israeli human rights group B‘Tselem captured the moment an Israeli soldier stepped forward and shot in the head at point-blank range in plain view of a medical team Abeal-Sharif, who had already been shot and left motionless on the ground.

The dailies also reported that Sawsan Mansour, 17, was laid to rest in her hometown of Biddu after he body was released by Israeli military (occupation) authorities.

It is also worth noting that Mansour, who was expected to start her final high school exams on Saturday, was killed by Israeli forces after she allegedly attempted to stab an Israeli soldier at the Ras Biddu military checkpoint, north of Jerusalem, on Monday.

Furthermore, the three dailies reported that at least two Palestinians were shot and injured and dozens others suffocated from tear gas inhalation as Israeli forces quelled weekly Friday marches across the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Al-Quds explained that Israeli forces shot and injured two Palestinians with live ammunition in the southern West Bank city of Bethlehem and east of Gaza city.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that Israeli settlers torched and chopped down dozens of Palestinian-owned trees the south of Nablus. Al-Ayyam explained that settlers leveled Palestinian lands in order to expand the Neve Daniyyel settlement near Bethlehem.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida explained that settlers leaders expect that Lieberman would pay them back for supporting his appointment for the ‘Defense’ Minister position by stepping up settlement construction across the West Bank.

President Mahmoud Abbas’ visit to Cairo ahead of Arab foreign ministerial meeting also hit the front page headlines in the dailies.

Al-Quds reported that Abbas would brief Arab foreign ministers about the Palestinian position on the French ideas ]to hold an international peace conference on June 3[.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida added that Abbas met with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil al-Arabi and is scheduled to meet his Egyptian counterpart Abdel al-Fattah al-Sisi.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted Israeli right-wing mayor of ]West[ Jerusalem Nir Barkat’s plan to ‘transfer’ the Palestinian neighborhoods isolated by the Israeli wall to the Palestinian Authority’s control. The plan intends to cut Palestinian neighborhood from Jerusalem.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted Israeli Minister of Environmental Protection Avi Gabai’s resignation from the government coalition in response to the appointment of Avigdor Lieberman joining the government and as Israel’s ‘Defense’ Minister.

Finally, al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Israeli forces fired tear gas canisters at the Tuqu‘ Municipal building, east of Bethlehem, setting the first floor on fire.
