Newspaper Review: Dailies Cover Fatal Pilgrims’ Bus Accident in Jordan

RAMALLAH, March 17, 2016 (WAFA) - The three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused in their Thursday issue on the fatal bus accident in which around 14 Palestinian pilgrims were killed and 36 were injured near the Saudi borders.

The three dailies quoted the Jordanian government spokesman as saying: “Installing surveillance cameras in Al-Aqsa mosque compound helps to document the Israeli violations”.

They reported on President Mahmoud Abbas meeting with the Japanese envoy to the Middle East, Masahiro Chono, and his call for the planning and execution of the French-initiated international peace conference to be expedited.

Al-Quds said France has expressed its concern, while Washington D.C condemned the Israeli decision to seize 2300 Dunums in Jericho.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam also reported that Israeli armed forces had demolished two homes owned by Palestinian families near Bethlehem and a garage near Jerusalem. Al-Ayyam added that Israel has arrested a large number of Palestinians and issued several jail sentences to many Palestinian children.

Meanwhile, al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Quds quoted the Palestinian Prime Minister Rami al-Hamdallah as saying: “The second payment of the teachers’ raises will be transferred before April 15th”.

Al-Quds said Israeli forces raided several Palestinian villages and arrested a Palestinian child under pretext of attempted stabbing.

It also reported that Israel is planning the establishment of a new Israeli settlement on land that belongs to Palestinians in a village near Nablus.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida also said an official and public reception was held for Hanan Hroub in Jericho who won the Global Teacher Prize 2016.

It quoted Hroub as saying: “My win is recognition of the Palestinian teacher. I will allocate part of the prize to support education.”
