Israel Places 43 Palestinians in Jail without Charge, Trial

RAMALLAH, March 16, 2016 (WAFA) – Israeli authorities on Wednesday issued administrative detention orders, without a charge trial, against 43 Palestinian detainees, according to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS).

PPS said while 19 detainees received administrative orders for the first time, the remaining 24 others received renewed administrative detention orders.

One of the detainees, Sami Yousef Hussein, received a new administrative detention order, despite that he has spent 25 years as a political prisoner in Israeli jails.

Under administrative detention, detainees are held without charge or trial and for indefinite and renewable period of time.

According to the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem, “Israel’s use of administrative detention blatantly violates the restrictions of international law. Israel carries it out in a highly classified manner that denies detainees the possibility of mounting a proper defense. Moreover, the detention has no upper time .”

“Over the years, Israel has placed thousands of Palestinians in administrative detention for prolonged periods of time, without trying them, without informing them of the charges against them, and without allowing them or their counsel to examine the evidence,” B’Tselem reports.

Palestinian detainees have continuously resorted to open-ended hunger strikes as a way to protest their illegal administrative detention and to demand an end to this policy which violates international law.

There are currently around 500 detainees serving administrative detention in several Israeli jails, 18 of whom are members of the Palestinian Legislative Council.
