Newspaper Review: Cairo Conference to Rebuild Gaza after Israeli Offensive Dominates Dailies

RAMALLAH, October 12, 2014 (WAFA) – Al-Hayat al-Jadida front page headline Sunday highlighted the opening of the Cairo conference to rebuild the Gaze Strip following a 50-day offensive that caused severe damage to the territory's infrastructure.

It said that over 50 world countries and 20 regional organizations will participate in the conference in the presence of president Mahmoud Abbas and Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

Al-Ayyam reported on the intensive communication efforts in the days leading up to the conference, hosted by Egypt and sponsored by Palestine and Norway, to guarantee providing sufficient funds which amount to $4 billion to rebuild the destroyed strip.

Meanwhile, Al-Quds highlighted the Arab League’s calls for international guarantees to prevent the reoccurrence of the Israeli offensive against Gaza. It also reported on the league’s adherence to the Arab Peace Initiative ‘ignored by [Benjamin] Netanyahu’.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida printed photos of Abbas and Palestinian high ranking officials along with the Arab League’s Chief Nabil al-Arabi during meetings on Saturday in Cairo.

Al-Quds also reported on the Arab League warning Israel not to jeopardize Jerusalem or turn the Palestinian-Israeli conflict into a religious fight.

Al-Ayyam reported on United States Secretary of State John Kerry’s plans to call for the resumption of the peace process. The paper also said that Washington questions the possibility of raising $4 billion.

A report on the death of about 2511 Palestinian refugees since the beginning of the war in Syria is featured on the front page of al-Ayyam.

The seizure of about 80 dunums of land that belongs to al-Khader town, south of Bethlehem to build a Jewish synagogue and public utilities to serve the illegal settlers of ‘Neve Daniel’ dominated the front page of Al-Quds.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted the suffering of Palestinian farmers in a story titled “Settlers attack olive pickers and occupation confiscates tens of dunums in al-Khader”.

The newspaper followed the story with a photo of a Palestinian family picking what remains of its olive trees as a result to the construction of the illegal Separation Wall.
