Newspaper Review: Recognition of Palestinian National Consensus Government Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, June 4, 2014 – (WAFA) – Recognition and welcoming of the new Palestinian national consensus government by international actors and the Israeli cabinet’s decision to impose sanctions on it hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

Here are the front page headlines of Palestinian dailies.

Al-Quds

·         During the first session of the national consensus government, ]Palestinian Premier Rami[ Hamdallah states: “Together with President ]Mahmoud Abbas[, we will soon head to Gaza.”

·         Hamdallah: “Ministry of Prisoner’s Affairs has not been dissolved. It is entrusted with providing decent life for prisoners, ex-prisoners along with their families.”

·         Israeli cabinet approves punitive sanctions against the ]Palestinian[ Authority (PA) and Hamas as well as forms a committee to discuss annexing parts of the West Bank to Israel.

·         As a result of tightened Israeli restrictions, al-Aqsa Mosque is empty from worshipers and personnel, while hundreds of extremist Jews storm it and assault ]Head of the Waqf Council in Jerusalem ‘Abdul ‘Athim[ Salhab.

·         Settlers storm Joseph’s Tomb in Nablus, the fall of a martyr in Huwwara, clashes erupt in many areas with injures and arrests reported.

·         Al-Sisi is declared Egypt’s president-elect with 96.6% of votes.

·         Israeli authorities renew the administrative detention for the second and third consecutive time for 41 prisoners who have been on hunger strike for 42 days.

·         In defiance of the Israel National Bioethics Council’s opinion, ]Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin[ Netanyahu states: “We will find physicians who are willing to force-feed ]Palestinian[ hunger-striking prisoners.”

 

Al-Ayyam

·         Worldwide countries welcome the formation of the national consensus government; Israel feels it was betrayed by the US.

·         Hamdallah: “Financial and administrative committees are formed to examine the cases of Gaza employees.”

·         A martyr from Huwwara is shot and killed by Israeli occupation soldiers at Zaʻtara checkpoint.

·         After he was officially declared as Egypt’s president-elect, Al-Sisi: “It is time to take actions to achieve the goals of January 25 Revolution.”

·         Officials: “Restricting the entry of ]Palestinian[ citizens into the Al-Aqsa Mosque is a prelude for the temporal division of the mosque between Jews and Muslims.”

·         President ]Abbas[ congratulates Al-Sisi on his victory.

 

Al-Hayat Al-Jadida:

·         The world welcomes the formation of the ]national[ consensus government, Israel “opens fire” on the US.

·         Netanyahu forms a ministerial committee to discuss annexing parts of the West Bank ]to Israel.[

·         President ]Abbas[ congratulates Al-Sisi and receives phone calls from ]King of Morocco[ Mohammad VI, ]Tunisian President Munsif[ Al-Marzuki and ]Hamas high-ranking official Khlaed[ Mashʻal.

·         Will the President address the elections dilemma during the speech, [which he will deliver during the next two day],( in terms of the elections law and mechanisms?

·         The new ]Palestinian[ government asks public sector employees in Gaza to resume their work.

·         Hamdallah: “The Ministry of Prisoners Affairs has not been dissolved.”
