Newspaper Review: Dailies Highlight US Efforts to Rescue Peace Talks

RAMALLAH, April 8, 2014 (WAFA) – The US efforts to salvage negotiations between the Palestinian and Israeli sides hit the headlines of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Tuesday.

Al-Quds said in its main news story: “the negotiations package is standing still despite of successive meetings.” It added that the League of Arab States has stressed rejection of the pressures put on President Mahmoud Abbas.

It said the Washington administration “is insisting on the term ‘constructive and positive’ and that both sides prefer to continue talks.”

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported in its main front page story on a “new tripartite meeting” that will see the Palestinian, the Israeli and the American sides gathering again to push peace process forward. It said “Washington” is continuing attempts to salvage peace talks.

In the main news story of al-Ayyam, it reported on “hectic US endeavors to make a breakthrough to salvage negotiations before the Arab League meeting on Wednesday.”

It said Israeli ministers have been exchanging accusations due to different views on negotiations.

Furthermore, the three dailies quoted analysts as saying Abbas is attempting to achieve diplomatic success at the international level.

In a different news subject, al-Quds said the Israeli forces on Sunday arrested a dozen Palestinians in the West Bank as well as demolished structures belonging to Palestinians.

Al-Ayyams said Israeli army arrested a group of Palestinian attorneys in Nablus under the pretext of dealing with the Hamas movement.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the army has “broadened their campaign against Palestinian attorneys, arresting some of them.”

It said the Palestinian government has allocated 150 NIS for medical treatment of the Palestinian prisoners, held in Israeli jails, who suffer infertility.

The three dailies said Hamas leader in Gaza, Ismail Haniyya, had told the Fatah delegation he welcomes their imminent visit to the Gaza Strip for national reconciliation talks.

Al-Ayyam and al-Quds said Jewish extremist Moshe Viglen, along with other settlers, entered al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem in a provocative visit on Monday.

Al-Quds said Israel has been under cyber attacks by the “Anonymous” group, a group of international hackers, since early Monday.

The three papers said nine people were killed in armed clashes between minor Palestinian groups in Mieh Mieh refugee camp.

Al-Ayyam said the Israeli army has accused the Syrian army of using chemicals a week ago.
