JERUSALEM, February 1, 2014 (WAFA) –Tear gas fired Friday by Israeli soldiers in an area of al-Ram, bordering Jerusalem to the north, where a football game was taking place forced the referees to suspend the game for few minutes due to difficulty in breathing.
Witnesses said the game between Shabab al-Bireh and Islamic
Qalqilya held at Faisal Husseini stadium in al-Ram, located right behind the
eight-meter high concrete wall Israel has built to separate al-Ram from its
Jerusalem environs, was stopped when the gas filled the air and made it hard
for the players and referees to breathe.
The match resumed seven minutes later after the air was clear of the gas.
Confrontations have erupted in al-Ram area between Palestinians, who were protesting the Israeli army killing earlier of a Palestinian worker north of Ramallah, and Israeli soldiers.
The stadium is located in the middle of a crowded Palestinian residential area.
