President Abbas meets Arab League Secretary-General in Cairo

RAMALLAH, September 16, 2026 (WAFA) — President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas, met on Wednesday with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Nabil Fahmy.

During the meeting, held at the League’s headquarters in Cairo, the President praised the significant role played by the League of Arab States in supporting the Palestinian cause. He commended its steadfast positions and the efforts of fellow Arab countries to uphold the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, aiming toward the achievement of their freedom and independence.

President Abbas reviewed political and on-the-ground developments in Palestine amidst the dangerous escalation in the West Bank—including Jerusalem—driven by settlement expansion, settler terrorism, and attacks on holy sites. He also addressed the ongoing aggression against the Gaza Strip, which continues to face blockade, starvation, and daily killings, despite the announced ceasefire.

The meeting discussed ways to enhance coordination and cooperation between the State of Palestine and the League of Arab States. Key topics included mobilizing Arab and international support for the Palestinian cause, ensuring protection for the Palestinian people, reconstructing what was destroyed by the war in Gaza, halting settlement activities, confronting plans to displace the Palestinian people, and rallying efforts to end the occupation and realize an independent Palestinian state.

The President addressed the difficult economic situation facing the State of Palestine due to Israel’s continued withholding of over six billion dollars in Palestinian tax revenues, alongside measures aimed at undermining the institutions of the Palestinian National Authority. He emphasized the importance of activating the Arab financial safety net during these challenging and exceptional circumstances to support the steadfastness of the Palestinian people.

President Abbas also briefed the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States on the achievements made by the Palestinian government in implementing the national reform program, affirming his commitment to renewing national legitimacy through elections.

The meeting was attended by Hussein Al-Sheikh, Vice President and Deputy Chairman of the PLO Executive Committee; Rawhi Fattouh, Speaker of the Palestinian National Council; Major General Majed Faraj, member of the Fatah Central Committee and Head of the General Intelligence Service; Majdi Al-Khaldi, Advisor to the President for Diplomatic Affairs; and Ambassador Naji Al-Naji, Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of the State of Palestine in Egypt.
