President Abbas posthumously awards Vietnamese general Star of Palestine

HANOI, June 19, 2026 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas posthumously awarded the late Vietnamese General Vo Nguyen Giap the Grand Cordon of the State of Palestine Order, the "Star of Palestine," in recognition of his longstanding support for the Palestinian people.

On behalf of President Abbas, Palestinian Ambassador to Vietnam, Saadi Al-Tamizi, presented the Grand Collar of the "Star of Palestine" to the late General’s family during an official ceremony organized by the Palestinian Embassy, in cooperation with the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Vietnamese Communist Party, and the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense.

The Grand Cordon was awarded by presidential decree in recognition of General Giap's historic stature and his exceptional contributions to Vietnam's national liberation struggle and global movements for freedom, as well as in honor of his principled positions and steadfast support for the rights of the Palestinian people and their legitimate struggle for freedom, independence, and self-determination.

The ceremony was attended by the Vietnamese Political Bureau member, and Deputy Prime Minister Lieutenant General Phan Van Giang, along with several senior Vietnamese officials, representatives of central institutions, and members of the late general's family.

In his remarks, Ambassador Al-Tamizi said that President Abbas's decision to bestow this high distinction upon General Giap reflects Palestine's appreciation for the historic role in leading the Vietnamese people's struggle for liberation and independence, as well as the special place he occupies in the hearts of peoples striving for freedom and justice.

He added that General Giap became a global symbol of determination, resilience, and liberation, and that his experience in struggle inspired many peoples around the world, foremost among them the Palestinian people.

He also noted that General Giap was a friend of the late President Yasser Arafat and of the Palestinian people, and that his name remains associated in Palestinian memory with support for Palestinian national rights and his close ties with Palestinian leaders, earning him deep respect and a special place among Palestinians.
