UNRWA: Israel detained more than 50 agency employees in Gaza

RAMALLAH, April 29, 2025 (WAFA) – The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, said on Tuesday that the Israeli occupation authorities have arrested more than 50 UNRWA employees since the beginning of the aggression on the Gaza Strip, including teachers and doctors.

Lazzarini explained that the detainees were subjected to shocking and inhumane violations, including beatings, ill-treatment, and the use of some as human shields. He noted that many of them were forced to make forced confessions under duress.

He described what happened as "horrific and shocking," calling for an international investigation and holding accountable those responsible for these violations and crimes committed against civilians, which violate international law in the Gaza Strip.

Lazzarini also indicated that thousands of tons of humanitarian aid are ready to enter Gaza, but the closure of the crossings by the occupation authorities is preventing this, leading to the spoilage of essential supplies amid the worsening hunger crisis.

He said that there are approximately 3,000 trucks loaded with aid awaiting entry, calling for the immediate lifting of the blockade to ensure that aid reaches those in need.
