RAMALLAH, February 7, 2025 (WAFA) – The Palestinian Ministry of Education and Higher Education urged United Nations (UN) organizations to assume their role in safeguarding Palestinian educational institutions, as Israeli forces continue their relentless and systematic attacks on schools and educational facilities in the governorates of Jenin, Tulkarem, Tubas and the Northern Jordan Valley. These attacks have been ongoing for nearly three weeks.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Ministry highlighted the severe impact these assaults have had on schools, including the destruction of several educational facilities such as the Tammun school and the storming of others, including the Al-Adawiya school. As a result, approximately 100 schools in these regions have experienced disruptions to their academic schedules.
The ministry stressed that these attacks not only violate international law but also target the fundamental right of children to receive education in a safe environment.
These actions, the ministry stated, are a grave violation of children’s rights, as they not only result in educational setbacks but also impact the psychological well-being of students and teachers. The destruction of educational infrastructure is severely hampering the learning process, making it difficult for children to safely access education, said the ministry in a statement.
It called on relevant international organizations, including UNESCO, UNICEF and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to assume their responsibilities toward protecting the rights of children and the right to education, and to take decisive action to halt these ongoing assaults that jeopardize the stability of the educational process in Palestine.
The Ministry further emphasized its unwavering commitment to safeguarding educational institutions, assuring that it will continue to monitor this issue at all levels.
It expressed a strong hope that the international community would act swiftly and decisively to end these violations and uphold Palestinian children's right to education within a secure and protective environment.
