AMMAN, October 28, 2024 (WAFA) - The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates strongly condemned the Israeli Knesset's adoption of draft laws banning the activities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (UNRWA) and preventing its staff from obtaining the diplomatic privileges and immunities granted to UN organizations operating in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT), including East Jerusalem, as a flagrant violation of international law and the obligations of Israel as the occupying power in the occupied Palestinian Territory, as reported by Jordan’s Petra news agency.
The ministry's spokesperson, Sufyan Al-Qudah, said that the adoption of these laws is part of the systematic targeting campaign against UNRWA and a continuation of Israel's frantic efforts to assassinate the UN agency politically, in addition to its aggressive war on the Palestinian people, noting that these Israeli measures and practices are illegal and invalid, said Petra.
He said that Israel's attempts to target UNRWA and its symbolism, which emphasizes the right of Palestinian refugees to return and compensation in accordance with international law, are doomed to failure, added Petra.
Al-Qudah stressed the need for immediate and urgent action by the international community to address Israel's aggressive practices against the Palestinians, and the need to impose deterrent measures to ensure the protection of the Palestinian people and UN organizations and relief agencies, warning of the catastrophic consequences of the continuation of the campaign of Israeli allegations and measures aimed at assassinating UNRWA politically and obstructing its efforts to provide its basic services and humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians in light of the humanitarian disaster left by Israel in its aggressive war on the Gaza Strip, and its continued dangerous escalation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Al-Qudah underscored the importance of the UNRWA's mandate in accordance with its UN mandate, adding that the international community must continue to provide financial and political support to the UN agency, which plays an irreplaceable role in providing vital services to Palestinian refugees in its five areas of operations, added Petra.
