Israeli actions threaten to end Palestinian presence in northern Gaza - UN warning

NEW YORK, October 21, 2024 (WAFA) - The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) cautioned that the Israeli occupation's attacks, combined with imposed restrictions and forced displacement in northern Gaza could endanger the existence of the Palestinian people there.

In a statement issued today, the office described the attacks carried out by Israel in northern Gaza as horrific.

The statement added that life has become impossible for civilians trapped in northern Gaza, with many residents on the brink of famine due to repeated forced displacement and severe restrictions on access to essential humanitarian aid supplies.

It noted that Israeli forces continue to relentlessly bombard the area and launch brutal attacks, especially targeting the Jabalia refugee camp and its surrounding areas.

The statement affirmed that Israeli occupation forces stripped many citizens of their belongings ahead of the winter and destroyed homes and schools being used as shelters.

On October 6, Israeli occupation forces initiated a ground offensive in northern Gaza, surrounding the entire area and carrying out numerous massacres, including the execution of displaced individuals, shelling of civilian gatherings, and attacks on schools sheltering the displaced. They also banned the entry of essential supplies, including water, food and medical aid.

Since October 7, 2023, Israeli forces have continued their assault on the Gaza Strip by land, sea and air, resulting in the killing of 42,603 civilians and the injury of 99,795 others, mostly women and children.

Thousands remain missing under the rubble.
