Government responds to striking public teacher demands, students to return to schools tomorrow after over two months of strike

RAMALLAH, Monday, April 24, 2023 (WAFA) – The school year will be resumed tomorrow in all public schools across the West Bank after the government responded to striking teachers’ demands for better pay following over two months of strike.

Two months after several interventions to resolve the issue have failed to yield results, the government responded to teachers’ demands for the professionalization of education and their demands for better pay.

The government agreed to raise teacher salaries by 15 percent, of which 5% will be given to public teachers with their salaries, while the remaining 10% will be added to the pay slips, which will be included retroactively in the 2023 budget.

The return to schools was also successfully achieved after the General Union of Palestinian Teachers (GUPT) agreed to prepare for elections before the start of the new school year.

The government also agreed to unanimously ratify the amendments that ensure transparency for the conduct of the democratic process.
