Palestine demands an international investigation into prisoner’s death

RAMALLAH, Friday, February 10, 2023 (WAFA) – Palestine today demanded an international investigation into the death of a prisoner in Israeli custody due to medical negligence.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates called upon the International Criminal Court (ICC) as well as the United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel (COI OPTEJI) to shoulder their responsibility in terms of opening an inquiry into the death of Ahmad Abu Ali.

Abu Ali, a 48-year-old Palestinian father-of-nine from Yatta city, died in Israeli custody due to deliberate medical negligence.

Detained since 2012, Abu Ali, was sentenced to 12 years in imprisonment. He only had two years left before his release. Throughout his imprisonment years, he suffered from several diseases, chronic heart problems, and diabetes.

According to the PPS, the Israeli Prison Service (IPS), which administers prisons and detention facilities, deliberately delayed providing him with the necessary treatment, conducting medical examinations, and following up on his health status, which led to his death today.

The Ministry held the Israeli occupation authorities fully liable for Abu Ali’s death and urged the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), ICC among other UN specialized institutions to assume their legal responsibilities in terms of the treatment of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails and take all measures necessary to ensure prisoners are protected and treated as prisoners of war as per the Geneva Conventions, and ensure their immediate release.
