RAMALLAH, Sunday, April 25, 2021 (WAFA) – Three Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails are currently on hunger strike in protest against their illegal administrative detention without charge or trial, today said the Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS).
Imad Sawarkeh, 37 years old, has been on hunger strike since March 18 after an Israeli court renewed his administrative detention for an additional term in prison. He was first detained in July 2020, and was supposed to be released on the day his first administrative detention order was renewed.
Another prisoner, Musab al-Hour, 33, also started a hunger strike on April 13 after the Israeli occupation authorities renewed his administrative detention order. He has been in prison since 2019.
The third prisoner, journalist Alaa Rimawi, is also on his fifth day of hunger strike in protest of his detention without a charge or trial. He is a former prisoner in Israeli jails, and has served a total of 11 years in prison.
All of the three prisoners are married and have children.
There are about 4,500 Palestinian and Arab political prisoners serving sentences in Israeli detention for resisting the prolonged Israeli occupation of their homeland. Of those, there are some 350 detainees held in prison as administrative detainees, without a charge or trial including minors and elderly.
Administrative detention is a procedure that allows the Israeli military prosecutor to hold prisoners indefinitely on secret information without charging them or allowing them to stand trial. Administrative detention is mainly used to detain Palestinians from the West Bank, Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip, and Palestinians holding the Israeli nationality.
