Newspapers review: Palestinian government lockdown decision in some cities highlight of dailies

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, December 8, 2020 (WAFA) – The decision by the Palestinian government to impose an around-the-clock lockdown on four major Palestinian cities while keeping the weekend and night lockdown on the others was highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said that in its effort to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease, the government adopted new measures that include total lockdown of four districts, night lockdown in the others and government offices working as per the emergency plan.

Al-Quds said the government decided to shut down Nablus, Hebron, Bethlehem and Tulkarm starting Thursday night and for seven days to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Al-Ayyam also said these four cities will be in lockdown as the night and weekend lockdown continues in the rest of the cities, and said that Hebron merchants have protested the closure order against their city.

Developments with the coronavirus in general at home, at neighboring states and in the world also occupied front-page headlines of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

The papers also reported on other government decisions, including allocating funds for government development projects in the Jordan Valley.

Al-Quds said UNESCO adopted two resolutions on Palestine.

It said a delegation of European Union diplomats is expected to visit Gaza today.

It also said that residents of the occupied Syrian Golan have demonstrated against Israeli takeover of their lands.

Al-Ayyam said nine youths were injured by Israeli army gunfire during raids of Qalandia and Deheishe refugee camps in the center and south of the West Bank, respectively.

It said settlers have attacked Palestinian residents of Silwan neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem.

It quoted the Arab League’s secretary-general calling for a restart of serious negotiations in order to establish the Palestinian state.

It said the United Arab Emirates has invested 28 million euros in a racist Israeli football club.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said a Dutch lawmaker has called on her government to take action against Israel for killing a 13-year-old Palestinian boy.

It said Spain contributed 400,000 euros for food program in Gaza.

It also said Gaza hospitals are facing chaos, pressure, over-crowdedness and lack of organization.
