RAMALLAH, August 17, 2013 (WAFA) – The developments in Egypt and the death of many people in the clashes between police and supporters of the deposed Muslim Brotherhood regime were the focal front page story in the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Saturday.
All papers highlighted the large number of people killed in what some described as “bloody Friday,” and printed pictures showing the agony of the people and the gathering for the protests.
Al-Ayyam printed several stories related to the events in Egypt on its front page giving analysis and reactions from various parties, put mainly the position of the Palestinian leadership that came out in support of the government of Egypt to bring law and order back to its country.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Quds also printed the Palestinian position as well as other stories that have developed as a result of the crisis in Egypt.
Al-Quds highlighted stories that expose Israeli efforts to assume full control over East Jerusalem through the building of more housing units in the settlements that have engulfed the Arab city and through laws that allow the government to seize Arab property in the city under the pretext the owner is absentee.
Al-Quds said in a story that Israeli police arrested three former Palestinian women prisoners during a visit to fellow former prisoner in the town of Kufr Qassem inside Israel. It said the police took the three former prisoners from the village of Assira al-Shamaliya, near Nablus, to prison and their fate was not immediately known.
The same paper also said in a story that a Fatah delegation travelled to Gaza under instructions from President Abbas to discuss elections with Hamas.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said in a story that the Israeli army cracked down hard on the weekly anti-wall, anti-settlements protests in various West Bank villages and removed a tent village Palestinian activists had set up on private land north of Bethlehem in an area surrounded by Israeli settlements.
The three papers reported on the attack by pro-Israel groups against the king and queen of Sweden for putting over their shoulder a Palestinian kuffiya during a tour of a town in Sweden where Palestinian expatriates live.
