RAMALLAH, November 17, 2012 (WAFA) – Day three of the Israeli air attacks on the Gaza Strip dominated the Saturday issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.
The main headline in al-Quds said Israel was getting ready to start a land invasion of the Gaza Strip as it recalls 75,000 reservists to duty.
Al-Ayyam headline said “Missiles reach Jerusalem and signs of imminent land invasion of Gaza.”
Al-Hayat al-Jadida also said “11 martyrs and missiles falling on Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.”
All papers gave prominent space to pictures showing injured Gaza children and civilians as well as destroyed buildings and Israeli tanks massing up at the borders with Gaza.
The three papers reported on statements President Mahmoud Abbas made on Friday at an emergency meeting for the Palestinian leadership in which he said that this is the chance to reach reconciliation and that the Palestinians are still going to the United Nations regardless of all that is going on.
The papers also reported on claims that fighters in Gaza had downed an Israeli warplane and captured its two pilots, while Israel had denied these reports.
They also reported on the visit to Gaza by Egyptian Prime Minister Hisham Qindeel on Friday during which he visited hospitals and talked to officials in a move considered a show of support to the people of Gaza.
Al-Ayyam quoted Qindeel as saying that Egypt was working on bringing calm and on ending the aggression.
The same paper said that the resistance groups executed a Palestinian after he was convicted of being an informant to Israel on missile bases and fighters.
The papers said Palestinians throughout the West Bank and East Jerusalem demonstrated in the streets against the Israeli attacks on Gaza.
While all the front page news in the three papers focused on the war on Gaza, al-Hayat al-Jadida also reported on its front page on the developments in Jordan and the Friday protests that called on King Abdullah to leave, said the paper.
