Newspapers Review: Dismantle of Egyptian Parliament Dominates Dailies

RAMALLAH, June 17, 2012 (WAFA) - The chairman of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces of Egypt Mohammad Tantawi’s decision to dismantle the Egyptian parliament dominated Sunday’s issue of the Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Quds reported that Tantawi’s declaration to dissolve the parliament in accordance with the supreme constitutional court rule was met with rejection by the Muslim brotherhood.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted the first day of the Egyptian presidential run-off elections, in which over 50 million Egyptians are expected to cast their votes to choose between the Muslim brotherhood candidate Muhammad Mursi and former Prime Minister Ahmad Shafiq.

The two papers printed photos of Egyptian citizens standing in line to cast their votes at different polling stations across Egypt.

The two papers reported on the death of Saudi crown prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, who became heir to the throne at the age of 78 in 2011.

Al-Quds reported on 3,000 Jewish settlers raiding the town of Kufl Haris, east of Salfit, and Israeli forces assaulting protesters participating in the non-violent demonstration against Israeli settlements and Wall in Beit Ummr.

The papers featured President Mahmoud Abbas assigning a high rank delegation to meet senior officials in Vatican to make sure the Holy See’s position is still unchanged.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Amnesty International called on Israel to immediately release hunger-striking prisoner Mahmoud Sarsak, who is facing death due to his deteriorating health condition after 97 days of hunger strike.
