UN Agency Hands Over Ramallah Prison to Palestinian Police?

RAMALLAH, April 24, 2012 (WAFA) - The United Nations Office for Projects Services (UNOPS) handed over Ramallah Prison to the Correction and Rehabilitation Centres Department of the Palestinian Civil Police, ending seven months of redesigning and reconstruction work, an EUPOL COPPS press release said Tuesday.

It said the $1.25 million refurbishment project was funded by the Canadian Government.

With the massive modifications, Ramallah Prison’s capacity has increased to 200 inmates, to include females and juveniles.

UNOPS, the implementing agency, re-designed the facility, provided a modern kitchen, a laundry, recreational areas, installed surveillance cameras and other necessary security equipment and systems, said the release.

Sizable areas for visitors and lawyers were designated in the overhauled three-storey building, in addition to a yard to enable inmates to enjoy the sun and take exercise.

The new prison facility was designed according to international prison and human right standards. The EUPOL COPPS’ prison adviser has been supporting this project, providing expertise on security and other operational related issues.

The new premises helps to significantly improve the conditions of inmates and facilitates the work of their guards, it concluded.
