Newspaper Review: Dailies Highlight Signing Doha Agreement

RAMALLAH, February 7, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Arabic dailies Tuesday highlighted the Doha agreement signed between President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal under the auspices  of Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

Al-Quds front page story read: “Finally, they agreed. Abbas and Meshaal sign the Doha agreement to achieve national reconciliation.”

Al-Ayyam reported on the Doha agreement stating that Abbas will head the new national unity government and proceed with plans to hold presidential and legislative elections in the Palestinian Territory.

It quoted Azzam al-Ahmad saying that the new national unity government will be officially announced in Egypt on February 18.

The three dailies printed photos of Abbas, Meshaal and Al Thani during signing the Doha agreement to achieve national reconciliation under Qatari auspices.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida featured the Palestinian prisoner Khader Adnan, who has been on a hunger strike for 52 days, and his serious deteriorating medical situation.

Al-Quds reported on the Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki Moon saying that the current situation in the Palestinian Territory in “unacceptable”.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on the US shutting down of its embassy in Syria and Washington’s declaration that Russia and China will regret their Veto.

Al-Quds featured the representative of Russia in the Security Council, Vitaly Churkin’s threats against the Qatari Prime Minister, Hamad Bin Jassem, saying: “If you talk to me in this tone again, there will be no Qatar after today.”

Al-Quds editorial questioned the seriousness of the Doha agreement between Fatah and Hamas tackling the controversy of this agreement.
