RAMALLAH, February 6, 2012 (WAFA) - PLO Executive Committee Member, Hanan Ashrawi Monday welcomed the agreement signed in Doha between President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas leader Khaled Mishaal to form a new government and hold national elections in the near future.
Ashrawi said in a press release: “We welcome the reconciliation agreement signed in Doha today as an expression of commitment to bring about national unity and reconciliation in Palestine.”
She said that this agreement is intended as a temporary measure to break the current political impasse and pave the way for parliamentary and presidential elections.
Ashrawi added, “Regardless of the temporary nature of this agreement, some legislative steps have to be taken to ensure that such developments are consistent with the Basic Law.”
'It is our hope that this agreement will give the reconciliation process the momentum to succeed and that the international community will welcome such moves positively and constructively,” she concluded.
