RAMALLAH, February 6, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted on Monday President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal’s visit to the Qatari capital Doha and the meeting with the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to discuss implementing the reconciliation agreement.
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida front page stories reported on Abbas and Meshaal’s agreement to form a new government and hold national elections in the near future.
Al-Quds quoted a Palestinian source saying that an initial agreement was reached for Abbas to head the upcoming government.
The three papers printed the same photo for Abbas, Meshaal, Al Thani and other officials during their meeting in Doha.
Al-Ayyam featured the ongoing conflict in Syria and the killings in the midst of comprehensive condemnations of the Russian-Chinese veto.
Al-Quds featured the Human Rights Watch report regarding Israel’s restrictions on Palestinian family reunification in the West Bank and Gaza.
Al-Ayyam focused on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying: “Power is Israel’s only guarantee of peace and security.”
Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on Netanyahu’s scheduled visit to the US in March to give a speech at the AIPAC conference.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported on Abbas’ general secretary Tayeb Abdul Rahim denying claims that Jordan has pressured Abbas to resume talks with Israel.
Al-Quds editorial said that the Doha meeting between Abbas and Meshaal must be followed by fast and significant steps to conduct national elections to achieve freedom and independence.
