RAMALLAH, May 28, 2011 (WAFA) – The Arab League meeting in Qatar, scheduled for Saturday, and Abbas’ arrival in Doha to attend the Arab Peace Imitative Committee meeting that is supposed to answer US President Barack Obama’s proposals on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict was the main focus of Saturday’s Arabic dailies.
The three dailies featured Abbas’ persistence to seek United Nations recognition of a Palestinian state.
Al-Quds, in a front page exclusive report, said that the new head of the UN General Assembly, Joseph Deiss, stressed that a Palestinian state will not gain UN recognition and membership if the US vetoed it in the Security Council, even if two-thirds of all Council members recognized it.
Al-Ayyam front page story featured the G8 strong support for Obama’s peace proposal. The daily printed a group picture of the G8 leaders. Both Al-Quds and Al-Hayat Al-Jadida reported on the summit as well.
Al-Hayat Al-Jadida’s printed a picture of an activist holding a banner that read: “Settlers Get Out. Arab Jerusalem is Free,” in a demonstration in Ras Al-Amoud neighborhood in East Jerusalem. Below the picture a story on settlers’ attempts to deport Arab residents of Jerusalem.
On the last page, the paper posted a picture of an activist being assaulted by Israeli police at the demonstration.
Al-Quds also had a picture of Israeli police members arresting activists in the same demonstration.
Al-Ayyam was the only paper to cover the press conference following the meeting between Hamas and Fatah officials on Friday in Gaza. The headline said “Shaath: Fatah and Hamas Determined to Implement Reconciliation Agreement.”
The three dailies focused on events and demonstrations in Syria, Jordan and other Arab countries.
The editorials in Al-Ayyam and Al-Quds featured responses on Obama’s speech on May 20 and Netanyahu’s rejection of the two-state solution on 1967 borders.
