Gendelman: Serry`s Report Has Nothing to Do With Establishing Palestinian State

TELAVIV, April 13, 2011 (WAFA) – Ofir Gendelman, spokesman of the Israeli prime minister Wednesday said that Robert Serry’s report has nothing to do with the establishment of a Palestinian state which depends on direct negotiations and finding solutions for borders, settlements and refugees’ issues.

UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process and UN Secretary-General`s Personal Representative to the PLO and PA, Robert Serry, wrote a report confirming the readiness of the Palestinian institutions to establish an independent Palestinian state.

He said in his report that the Israeli occupation will be an obstacle to the development of the upcoming state.

Gendelman told WAFA that the Israel has the same stance of declaring a Palestinian state unilaterally, as the American and the European, adding that ending the conflict is going to be through direct negotiations and without declaring a state with no borders or a capital which will complicate the situation more.

Answering a question about Netanyahu`s terrified stance from the declaration of a Palestinian state in the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), he said that  “Netanyahu is concerned of taking a unilateral decision that might complicate the negotiations; in 1988  a Palestinian state was recognized, however it was only ink on papers, and this new recognition will be the same”.

Gendelman believes that “the establishment of a Palestinian state must be after the completion of negotiations on the core issues; borders, settlements, Jerusalem and refugees, adding that Israel can also take unilateral steps and he refused to give any examples”
