UNRWA Calls for an Urgent Donation to Palestinian People
GAZA, May, 25, 2004 (WAFA0- The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) offered on 89 housing units to homeless Palestinian residents of the southern Gaza towns of Rafah and Khanyounis that the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) destroyed their homes.... An UNRWA statement issued in Gaza said on Monday that 93 homeless families consist of 475 people; of those that their homes were demolished by the (IOF) in the two towns would get benefit of the new houses.... It said that the (IOF) had destroyed since the beginning of the Palestinian Intifada, or Uprising more than 1309 houses, leaving at least 18300 Palestinians homeless until now.... The statement said that the international relief organization is still carrying out its humanitarian activities and provides those who have not got houses with emergency aides of food and rent houses-fees until new houses are built.... It said that dozens of jobs opportunity had been created for thousands of workers who worked in constructing the new houses for the homeless families.... The statement said that building the new housing units as well as fixing the destroyed infrastructure cost 4.6 million dollars, adding that such projects had been achieved despite the shortage of budget that UNRWA suffers from.... UNRWA had urged donors to pay 193 million dollars, adding “until now it has just earned 55 million dollars, which is 29 percent of the demanded sum, adding that this “is a severe threat to the organization to continue with its activities".... UNRWA called for an urgent donation of 35 million dollars to rebuild those that their homes were destroyed and became homeless.... “UNRWA had built 374 houses in addition to another 241 houses are still under construction,†said the statement....
