Germany reiterates position that settlements are contrary to international law

BERLIN, Tuesday, November 19, 2019 (WAFA) – Germany reiterated today its position on Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories stressing that they are contrary to international law.

A German Foreign Ministry statement on Israeli settlements reacting to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announcing yesterday that settlements are not inconsistent with international law said that the German government reaffirms its position on Israeli settlement policy in the Occupied Territories and that from the German government‘s point of view, settlement building is contrary to international law, undermines the possibility of achieving the peace process and makes a negotiated two-state solution difficult to achieve.

The statement also made reference to United Nations Security Council resolution 2334, which confirms this international assessment.

The German government will continue to work with its European Union partners to reach an acceptable negotiated settlement "that is consistent with the legitimate demands of both parties to the conflict,” concluded the statement.
