Newspapers Review: Situation in Jerusalem’s Sur Baher neighborhood focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, Monday, July 22, 2019 (WAFA) – The situation in Wadi al-Hummus area, on the edge of East Jerusalem’s Sur Baher neighborhood, southeast of Jerusalem, dominated the front page headlines in today’s issue of the three Palestinian dailies.

Al-Quds reported that Israel’s High Court has rejected a lawsuit to suspend the demolition orders in Sur Baher, while al-Ayyam said that the Israeli court gave the green light to the demolition of 100 apartments in Wadi al-Hummus area.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida added in this regard that Israeli occupation forces surrounded the neighborhood in preparation for the demolition.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that Israeli troops raided the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Issawiyeh.

Al-Quds said that Israeli military bulldozers razed Palestinian land in the Jordan Valley, while al-Hayat al-Jadida elaborated that Israeli occupation authorities demolished shacks and seized tents in the northern Jordan Valley.

According to al-Quds, Israeli forces detained scores of Palestinians in multiple West Bank raids.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Fatah Revolutionary Council held its sixth session in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

Highlighting the situation in Gaza, al-Quds said that Israeli naval forces opened fire towards Palestinian fishermen off Rafah coast in the southern end of the besieged enclave and detained two fishermen.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that the Qatari grant of cash assistance is being disbursed to 60,000 impoverished families in Gaza.

According to al-Quds, White House senior advisor Jared Kushner and Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt will address the Manama economic workshop and alleged ‘peace issues’ on Mideast tour.

Al-Quds reported on head of Iran’s Strategic Council on Foreign Relations Kamal Kharazi describing his country’s relations with Hamas as important and growing.

It added that 186 Israeli settlers forced their way into Jerusalem’s flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, provoking Palestinian Muslim worshippers.

It reported Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi warning against the consequences of Israeli actions and stressing the importance of providing support to the United Nations agency responsible for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA.

Safadi made his remarks during a meeting with President of the United Nations General Assembly Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces in Amman.

According to al-Ayyam, seven Palestinian prisoners are suffering serious health conditions in Israeli jails because of their hunger strike.

It reported Palestinian political factions warning against the gravity of the construction of a borderline field hospital by the US administration in cooperation with Israel and Qatar in the northern Gaza Strip.

The Palestinian factions slammed the move as part of the results of the recent US-sponsored economic workshop in Manama.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Riyad al-Malki was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida saying that a new country will be recognizing the State of Palestine by the end of this month.

Both dailies said that Palestine Medical Association decided to suspend working at government hospitals and called for the enactment of a law that would criminalize assault on medical staff.

Al-Ayyam spotlighted Israeli media reports indicating that Israel mulls offering tax breaks to the Palestinian Authority to prevent the latter’s economic collapse.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro affirmed his country‘s firm position in support of the Palestinian question.

National Economy Minister Khaled Ossaili was reported in  al-Hayat al-Jadida announcing that a modern corporate law will be enacted before October 2019 and revealing that Jordan and Palestine has agreed to set up a joint logistics company with a capital of 30 million Jordanian dinars.
