Newspaper Review: Swearing-in of newly formed government focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Sunday, April 14, 2019 (WAFA) – The swearing-in ceremony in front of President Mahmoud Abbas of the 18th Palestinian government of Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayeh made headlines of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Sunday.

Al-Quds said that due to a typing error in the text of the swearing-in of the new government, the government will repeat the swearing-in ceremony in front of President Mahmoud Abbas today.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam quoted President Mahmoud Abbas as saying, “We have many difficult and complicated tasks ahead, and everyone is called upon to make every possible effort to serve the country.”

The President said “he does not think it is useful to talk with [US President Donald] Trump about any solution or issue, after he moved the US embassy [in Israel from Tel Aviv] to Jerusalem and recognized Jerusalem as capital of Israel,” as quoted by Al-Hayat al-Jadida.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam quoted Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayeh as saying that the newly formed government has a three-month emergency plan and that he hopes to reach out a solution to the current financial crisis affecting the Palestinian Authority.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said a Palestinian youth was shot and injured by Israeli soldiers at Beit Enun junction, northeast of Hebron, yesterday.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam said a Palestinian family from the Old City of occupied Jerusalem embarked yesterday on demolishing its own home after it was forced to do so by Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem to avoid paying exorbitant costs if the municipality carries out the demolition.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam said about 400 Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails are continuing their hunger strike for the sixth day demanding better imprisonment conditions.
