Newspapers Review: The Gaza protests with a child killed focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Saturday, April 13, 2019 (WAFA) – The Friday March of Return protests in the Gaza Strip that led to Israeli soldiers killing a 15-year-old Palestinian boy and injuring dozens others were reported on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies today.

The papers said Maysara Abu Shallouf was shot by a sniper in the abdomen east of Jabalya in the north of the Gaza Strip and killed while more than 60 others were injured, some by live bullets and others by teargas inhalation.

The papers also reported on the protests in the West Bank, focusing on the Israeli army arrest of children in Nabi Saleh village near Ramallah, as well as protests in Hebron, Bilin and Qabatiya.

Al-Quds said Israel approved the construction of hundreds of new settlement units in the occupied West Bank.

In other news, al-Hayat al-Jadida made televised remarks by President Mahmoud Abbas at the start of events related to declaring Jerusalem as the capital of the Muslim culture held in Jericho in which he said that the Palestinian people will always rise from the ashes of catastrophes and conspiracies to prove that no one will lose his rights as long as he is demanding them.

This story was also reported on the front page of the other two dailies.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also said Stockholm is hosting a strategic dialogue to raise financial and political support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

Reporting on the results of the Israeli elections, the paper said the Palestinians in Israel lost three seats in the parliament.

It said the United State banned Omar Barghouti, one of the founders of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement from entering its territory due to his role in the Israel boycott movement.

Al-Quds said in a report by its Washington correspondent that the new US anti-Semitism envoy, Elan Carr, equated opposing Zionism and supporting BDS with anti-Semitism.

It said US President Donald Trump warned the International Criminal Court based in The Hague against prosecuting Americans or Israelis.

It also said voices in the US are demanding that Israel does not annex parts of the West Bank.

Al-Ayyam quoted a US news report saying Trump is going to meet American-Jewish leaders to discuss with them his “deal of the century.”

It said more than 50,000 Muslim worshippers attended the Friday prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.
