Mardawi, who comes from the town of Arraba in the occupied West Bank, was arrested on April 5, 2002 during a major Israeli military crackdown on Jenin in the northern West Bank, and was sentenced to 21 life sentences and 40 years in jail for resisting the Israeli occupation.
