Newspapers Review: Death of Palestinian protestor, airstrikes on Gaza focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, June 4, 2018 (WAFA) – The death of a Palestinian protestor weeks after being shot by Israeli snipers and the series of Israeli airstrikes on multiple locations in Gaza hit the front page headlines in Palestinian Arabic dailies on Monday.

The dailies reported that Mohammad Naeem Hamada, 30, from Jabaliya refugee camp, succumbed to his wounds sustained after being shot by Israeli snipers as he participated in the Great March of Return protests east of Gaza city on May 14.

The dailies added that Israeli warplanes pounded multiple locations across the besieged Gaza Strip.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said a Palestinian young man was shot and injured by Israeli snipers after he allegedly approached the border fence, east of Khan Younes in the southern coastal enclave.

Al-Ayyam said that Palestinian factions reaffirmed their commitment to the ceasefire and refused to be drawn into Israeli military escalation.

The dailies said that Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu issued an order to withhold funds from the tax revenues collected on behalf of the Palestinian Authority to compensate Israeli farmers in Gaza periphery for damages caused by massive fires sparked by kites flown from Gaza.

On the other hand, al-Quds said that Israeli forces conducted multiple detention raids across the West Bank. According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, Israeli forces detained 10 Palestinians.

Al-Quds added that Israeli forces raided the Bethlehem-district towns of Husan, Tuquo as well as Aida refugee camp. They also raided Beit Rima village, northwest of Ramallah, sparking confrontations.

According to al-Quds, Israel is dragging its feet on recognizing social work degrees awarded by Al-Quds University.

It also reported that the Palestinian community of Khan al-Ahmar, east of Jerusalem, is nervously watching the imminent demolition of their community.

It also reported Gaza health ministry warning of a severe shortage of medicines and medical supplies in Gaza hospitals.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that Israel plans to legalize random settlement outposts in the West Bank and mulls to establish a new settlement near the central West Bank city of Ramallah.

According to al-Ayyam, a Palestinian farmer’s cows were killed in a mine explosion in the northern Jordan Valley.

Additionally, al-Hayat al-Jadida said that President Mahmoud Abbas has dispatched Foreign and Expatriates Minister Riyad Malki to Kuwait to deliver a written message of gratitude to Prince Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah for his country’s support for Palestine in international forums.

It said that Palestinians attended a rally in Ramallah city in protest of the killing of 21-year-old paramedic Razan Najjar, who was killed by Israeli snipers while trying to aid wounded protestors near Gaza border fence.

The Arab League was reported in al-Ayyam urging UN organizations to prosecute Israel for the killing of Najjar.

Furthermore, the Arab League was reported in al-Ayyam slamming the football match between Argentina and Israel, set to be played in Jerusalem’s Teddy Stadium on June 9, as illegal.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida added in this regard that chief of Palestinian Football Association Jibril Rjoub sent a letter of protest to the Argentinean government and called on Lionel Messi not to attend the match.

Al-Ayyam highlighted a letter by over 30 Israeli oncology specialists calling upon the Israeli Health Ministry and so-called Civil Administration to allow women cancer patients from Gaza to get urgent and lifesaving treatment in Israeli and West Bank hospitals.
