Arab League cancels understanding with Guatemala over its Jerusalem embassy

CAIRO, May 23, 2018 (WAFA) – The Arab League canceled on Wednesday the understanding with the Guatemalan Foreign Ministry it signed in 2013 in protest over the latter‘s move of its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, according to Arab League spokesman Mahmoud Afifi.

He said that at instructions from Arab League Secretary General Ahmad Abu el-Gheit, the understanding agreement between the Arab League and Guatemala has been cancelled and that Guatemala has been informed of this and that there will be no further cooperation between them due to its position from Jerusalem.

He said that this decision was made in accordance with the resolution of the recent extraordinary Arab League meeting at the level of Foreign Ministers, which condemned Guatemala for moving its embassy to Jerusalem and vowed to take proper political and economic sanctions against it.

He said moving the embassy was a clear violation of international consensus on the legal and historical status of Jerusalem as an occupied city and a violation of international law and United Nations resolutions on the city.
