RAMALLAH, May 21, 2018 (WAFA) – One week after the European Union (EU) failed to issue a statement condemning the United States for moving its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a new attempt is underway to issue such a statement, Abdel Rahim al-Farra, Palestine’s ambassador to the EU, said on Monday.
He told the official Voice of Palestine radio that a number of parliamentary blocs within the European Parliament are in the process of issuing a statement from all 28 EU member states condemning moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem.
Farra expressed hope that the statement would be passed by all EU member states and that no state would interfere in issuing it.
He was referring to the failure of the previous attempt to issue a statement following objections by the Czech Republic, Romania and Hungary. EU policy statements should be issued in consensus.
Farra said the European position should shift from rejecting and condemning the American embassy move to recognizing the state of Palestine on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
