AMMAN, February 16, 2018 (WAFA) - The Jordanian government Wednesday condemned the decision made by Guatemala to move its embassy to Jerusalem, following the US move.

Mohammad Al Momani, Minister of State for Media Affairs and Communications and government spokesperson said, "Guatemala‘s decision is irresponsible and will fuel the violence in the region and encourage Israel to continue violating international law."

“In its capacity as patron of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, Jordan condemns in the strongest terms such an irresponsible step,” he said.

Al Momani expalined that the decision of the government of Guatemala to transfer its embassy to occupied Jerusalem is a flagrant violation of international law and UN resolutions, especially the recent General Assembly resolution, which rejected US President Donald Trump‘s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

He said that peace-loving nations should support the two-state solution agreed upon by the international community, which requires the establishment of a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

“Jordan will remain the strongest supporter for the Palestinian people, who are sacrificing their lives for the right to an independent state on their land,” Al Momani concluded.
