Newspaper Review: death of wounded child in Gaza focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, May 13, 2018 (WAFA) – News about the Palestinian child who died of wounds sustained during protests against Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip hit the front page headlines of the three Arabic Palestinian dailies on Sunday.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that 15-year-old Jamal Afanah succumbed to wounds he sustained when he was shot by Israeli forces during the protests of the Great March of Return at Gaza-Israel border.

The papers also reported that Israeli fighter jets on Saturday evening carried out airstrikes on an agricultural land in the town of Beit Hanoun, in northern Gaza Strip, causing financial damage to the site and to neighboring homes.

The dailies said President Mahmoud Abbas’ met with his Cuban counterpart Miguel Diaz-Canel, at the presidential palace in Havana after arriving in Cuba on the third leg of his visit of South American countries.

The two leaders discussed political developments in Palestine and the Middle East as well issues of mutual concern and developing bilateral relations, particularly in the fields of investment, tourism and agriculture.

Abbas thanked the Cuban leader for his country’s support for the Palestinian people and cause as well as providing scholarships for Palestinian students studying medicine and engineering.

The papers also covered reactions to the US’ decision to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to occupied Jerusalem.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said that 30 ambassadors out of 86 countries, that have relations with Israel, will participate in opening the US embassy in Jerusalem.

Al-Ayyam reported that a peaceful march of a million participants will be held on Monday in protest of US President Donald Trump’s decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem .

Al-Quds said that peaceful activists marched in Jerusalem in rejection of moving the US embassy to Jerusalem.

The paper also said that  member of the PLO Executive Committee Ahmad Majdalani said the leadership is scheduled to meet in order to take practical moves to respond to the relocating of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to occupied Jerusalem.

Al-Ayyam and al-Quds said Hungary, Romania and the Czech Republic blocked the release of a statement by the European Union (EU) reasserting the EU’s position on Jerusalem and rejecting US plans to move the embassy to Jerusalem.
