Newspapers review: Injuring Palestinians in Jerusalem town, Gaza focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, April 2, 2018 (WAFA) – The injuring of Palestinians in the Jerusalem-district town of Abu Dis and across Gaza border hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies on Monday.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that Israeli forces injured a total of 98 Palestinians in Abu Dis town, east of Jerusalem.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Israeli forces injured scores of Palestinians, including a serious injury, in Gaza and the West Bank.

Al-Ayyam explained that a number of Palestinians were shot and injured by Israeli troops on the third of the Great March of Return in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Reactions to the killing of 16 Palestinians by Israeli military along Gaza border on the first day of the Great March of Return also dominated the front page headlines in the dailies.

Al-Quds reported that the European Union’s (EU) foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini called for an independent inquiry into the killing of the Palestinians.

According to al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida, Israel has rejected calls for an inquiry into Friday “massacre”, accusing those calling for such an inquiry as “hypocrites”.

The dailies added in this regard that the Arab League would hold an urgent meeting on Tuesday on Israeli deadly crimes against Palestinians in Gaza.

Al-Quds said Pope Francis appealed for reconciliation in the Holy Land, while he was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida referring to describing the 16 Palestinian fatalities as “the defencelss”.

Furthermore, al-Hayat al-Jadida spotlighted Foreign Ministry’s comments in response to the blocking by the US of a draft UN Security Council statement calling for an inquiry into the killing of 16 Palestinians in Gaza.

It reported the Foreign Ministry stating US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley was offering peace to the Palestinians based on entrenched Israeli occupation and settlement.

The Foreign Ministry was also reported dubbing Nikki as an “ambassador of hatred” and stating that her attempt to justify US President Donald Trump’s decision on Jerusalem as an internal US issue made her appear as a representative of the right-wing parties ruling Israel.

It was also reported stating that President Mahmoud Abbas’ positions “reflect Palestinian popular and national consensus” and “express the Palestinian people’s higher interests”.

Moreover, al-Quds reported former Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal vowing that neither would Palestinian refugees compromise their right to return nor surrender before the Israeli siege of Gaza.

Al-Quds said Israeli forces violently suppressed Palestinians who participated in a tree-planting activity in Deir Ballout town in Salfit district.

It added settlers flooded sewage into an orchard planted with grapes near Beit Ummar town, north of Hebron.

It also reported that a total of 275 settlers forced their way into East Jerusalem’s flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi were reported in al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida stressing that resolving the Palestinian question would fundamentally change the map of the region.
