RAMALLAH, January 9, 2018 (WAFA) – With the meeting for the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Central Council just around the corner, the three Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted on Tuesday issues that will be discussed in that meeting.
Al-Ayyam said in its main front page story that the Central Council, which is scheduled to meet in Ramallah on Sunday, is going to make a number of recommendations regarding the political process and the PLO’s recognition of Israel.
Al-Quds quoted Salim Zanoun, the president of the Palestinian National Council, the PLO’s parliament in exile, saying that the Central Council is going to discuss strategy for challenging the US decision recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
It also said Fatah Revolutionary Council discussed preparations for the Central Council meeting, which was also the headline of al-Hayat al-Jadida on this subject.
The papers reported also on the meeting in Ramallah between President Mahmoud Abbas and the Norwegian foreign minister.
Al-Ayyam highlighted developments regarding Ahed Tamimi, the 16-year-old Palestinian girl who confronted heavily armed Israeli soldiers who raided her village of Nabi Saleh and home. Israel is still holding Tamimi in detention for the third week in a row.
It said the United Nations has expressed concern about the Israeli detention of Tamimi as scores of children held a candlelight vigil in Gaza in support of Tamimi.
Al-Quds reported on UNRWA saying that it has a mandate to continue providing services to the Palestinian refugees until a just solution is found.
It also quoted King Abdullah of Jordan saying that Jerusalem should be a priority for everyone and nothing would change its historic and legal status, which was reported as well in the other two dailies.
Al-Ayyam quoted the British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson telling his Palestinian counterpart Riyad Malki during their meeting in London that Jerusalem should be the capital of two states – Palestine and Israel.
It said the Palestinian intelligence foiled an attempt to sell Palestinian land in the West Bank and Jerusalem to Israelis.
It also said the Israeli army detained 25 people in the West Bank including a woman the army claimed she attempted to stab soldiers.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli settlers uprooted olive trees in the village of Deir al-Hatab, east of Nablus.
It said US Vice President Mike Pence is going to visit the region later this month.
