RAMALLAH, December 14, 2017 (WAFA) –President Mahmoud Abbas’ speech at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) extraordinary session in Istanbul hit the front page headlines in Palestinian Arabic dailies on Thursday.
Abbas was reported in the dailies stating: “We will go to the UN Security Council to nullify ]US President Donald[ Trump’s announcement of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.”
He was also reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida stating that Trump’s declaration offering Jerusalem to the Zionist Movement would not pass.
Abbas was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida stating that as a result of ongoing Israeli violations, the Palestinian Authority would not remain committed to any agreements, including the Oslo Accords.
He was also reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida slamming a dishonest United States administration and casting it aside as a peace mediator.
Highlighting the final communiqué of the OIC’s session, al-Quds said OIC rejected Trump’s declaration on Jerusalem, considering it null and void and an impetus to terrorism and occupation.
OIC was also reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida declaring East Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine and inviting all countries to recognize the State of Palestine and East Jerusalem as its capital.
Al-Quds added Palestinians would seek a UN Security Council resolution to invalidate Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
It reiterated that OIC has set up a $1 billion trust fund to support Palestinians in East Jerusalem.
Renewed demonstrations that evolved into clashes across the occupied Palestinian territories over the US move to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital also hit the front page headlines.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that scores of Palestinians were injured and others detained when Israeli forces suppressed demonstrations that continued to rock the occupied Palestinian territories for the seventh consecutive day.
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida added that Israeli special forces disguised as Palestinian protestors grabbed five Palestinians, including a young woman, during clashes near the northern entrance of al-Bireh city.
Al-Quds added Israeli police quelled a Palestinian anti-Trump rally in the vicinity of East Jerusalem’s Damascus Gate, assaulting protestors.
Moreover, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported the custodian of the key to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher Adib Joudeh al-Husseini would not meet US Vice President Mike Pence during the latter’s visit to the region next week.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported Israeli occupation authorities have closed all border crossings with Gaza following rocket firing from Gaza at southern Israel.
Al-Quds also reported that the so-called Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem has introduced a plan to install a cable car that would link a former railway station in West Jerusalem to occupied East Jerusalem’s Dung Gate.
Al-Ayyam said Israeli occupation authorities have decided to demolish the sole school in the Palestinian Bedouin community of Abu Nuwar to the east of Jerusalem.
According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, French President Emmanuel Macron and Belgium Prime Minister Charles Michel are promoting an initiative on the status of Jerusalem in response to Trump’s declaration.
